This "ugly-ass" label is actually a billion-dollar masterclass in accidental branding.
Back in the 1870s, the Siegert brothers in Trinidad decided to enter a competition to "modernize" their dad's bitters. One brother went off to find a new bottle. The other went to design the label.
The problem? They clearly weren't on the same page. When the labels arrived at the factory, they were way too big for the bottles. They looked like a 12-year-old wearing his dad's suit — completely ridiculous, crinkled at the neck.
With the competition starting the next day, they had two choices. Panic, or pretend they meant to do it. They chose the latter.
A judge looked at it and said, "That's an ugly bottle," and recommended they fix it immediately. But then something interesting happened. Everyone in the room was talking about the "ugly" bottle, while completely ignoring all the perfectly designed ones.
They never changed it. A hundred and fifty years later, that mistake is a trademarked asset that makes them uncopyable.
"The lesson for your brand? Sometimes perfection is boring, and the mistake is what makes you iconic."
